Why Is My Gargoyle Gecko Scratching The Glass?

Typically, if your gargoyle gecko is scratching the glass that means it is either trying to play with its own reflection or it is unhappy with something. The latter is usually the more likely cause.

Does It Mean Something is Wrong?

An upset gecko is usually an indicator that they are stressed in their environment for one reason or another. It could be that the enclosure is too warm and they are trying to escape.

They could feel trapped by limited space or lack of freedom. If the tank is new to them, they could be acting out of stress.

If none of these seem to be the case, then there is a possibility that your gecko has mites and is trying to rub against the glass to ease irritability. Other signs of mites include itchiness, redness around the eyes, and lethargy.

What Should I Do About It?

If the issue lies within the tank environment, then you’ll need to fix it.

Either raise or lower the temperature to the appropriate warmth (between 77 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit). Get a bigger enclosure that will provide more room and freedom for your gecko to run around in. If the tank is new, then you can simply wait it out for your gecko to adapt in a few days.

If you suspect mites could be the issue, then you need to take your gecko to the vet for proper treatment. If you choose to do an at-home treatment, then you could give your gecko a diluted Betadine solution bath while using cotton swabs to remove the mites.

Conclusion

Overall, if your gecko is scratching the walls, it is often something to check into. You’ll want to observe other behavior to see if your gecko is unhappy or irritated by its environment. Check the tank temperatures and make sure the gecko has enough freedom to roam and is content. These things will ensure that your gecko is happy and thriving.
