Tokay Gecko

Do Tokay Geckos Make Noise? What Kind And Why?

Most animals have their own special ways of communicating. The tokay gecko is known for being able to make a wide range of noises, most of which they’ve implemented in an effort to talk with others.

When you have a tokay gecko at home, you might be surprised at just how much noise these little lizards are able to make. While they adapted some noises to be able to speak with other geckos, they are known to use some of the same noises to attempt to communicate with their humans as well.

Different noises mean different things, and it’s worth being able to tell the difference so you know what your tokay gecko needs.

Do Tokay Geckos Make Noise?

Tokay geckos make unique noises. In fact, their name comes from one of their known vocalizations; they were often heard in their native habitats yelling “to-kay” to their fellow geckos. Apart from this signature sound, tokay geckos are able to make a variety of different sounds and noises.

What Kind Of Noises Do Tokay Geckos Make?

It’s quite amusing to listen to all the varied noises that tokay geckos make. They can yell and scream, sing, croak, hiss, and even cackle. Many of the noises tokay geckos make are in an effort to communicate with others, and there’s no need to be concerned when you hear them.

For instance, the tokay gecko is known for singing when they are in the wild and trying to attract another gecko to mate with. They might still do this when domesticated, even if they’re in a tank on their own.

Why Do Tokay Geckos Make Certain Noises?

All animals make their own types of noises to communicate something. They may either want to simply interact, let you know they want something, or they may be trying to keep you away. The same can be said with tokay geckos.

Some of the louder, aggressive noises that tokay geckos make are in an effort to defend themselves. If you hear them hissing or croaking in your direction, it’s best to leave them alone. Tokay geckos aren’t fans of being handled.

Even if you’re not trying to disturb them, your gecko might interpret your actions as a threat and will subsequently try to scare you off with their hisses and croaks. This should be taken as a warning that they will attack if they keep being bothered.

Are Tokay Geckos Loud?

Tokay geckos are famous for being able to get very loud. This can become somewhat of a nuisance given that these geckos are nocturnal, so it’s worth keeping them in a room that’s not too close to where you sleep.

These are not the lizards to bring home if you don’t want to hear random sounds. These lizards can’t be trained to stay quiet, so you’ll have to learn to adapt to them. If they are loud because something is bothering them, take the time to learn what it is so you can remove the aggravation.

Final Thoughts

The tokay gecko can make a range of noises, some of which can surprise you. While some noises you may just have to learn to live with, some vocalizations may be your gecko’s way of letting you know they need something from you; most likely, these notoriously hungry lizards want food.
